About the Strike Zone
Jan Sumner, professional pitching coach and owner of The Strike Zone is available for group and private pitching instruction at schools, practices and ball fields.
Jan has been working with pitchers of all levels for the past twelve years, including major leaguers, minor leaguers, as well as college, high school and little league players. He was with the Colorado Rockies for six years as a batting practice pitcher and worked various other pre-game drills as well. His teaching methods have proven to be successful, as evidenced by the achievements of a number of professional, college and high school pitchers who have worked with Jan.
The overall pitching philosophy is straightforward. We're big on mechanics. If you don't have sold mechanics, it doesn't matter who you are - you're going to struggle.
We talk and work extensively on pitch selection, use of the four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, change-up and a breaking pitch.
We also stress the importance of reading hitters, and get into the various mental aspects of the difference between being a pitcher vs. a thrower.
Mechanics begin with achieving good balance and correct arm angle, which leads to optimum control, ball movement and velocity, within the limitations of any given players physical attributes. The primary focus is geared toward a sound, healthy delivery, which ultimately leads to success and longevity.
The teaching of breaking pitches is not taught until approximately the age of 16, depending on the individual.
Various training methods are also offered including proper techniques for conditioning, as well as body and arm strength. Rehabilitation methods are also available if needed.
